Paris in one day: what you can really see

Eight hours in Paris goes fast. Here is what fits, what you see from the coach or the boat, and what is better saved for another trip.

The escorted day trips build the same core route: a coach loop past the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Elysees, a Seine cruise past Notre-Dame, the Eiffel Tower, and free time near the Louvre. That is the classic first look at Paris.

If you go independently, you can swap parts of it for Montmartre, a museum or a long lunch.

The quick answer

In one day from London you can comfortably see the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Elysees from a coach, cruise the Seine past Notre-Dame, eat lunch inside the Eiffel Tower and walk around the Louvre area. A full museum visit, Montmartre and Versailles do not fit on an escorted day.

The Louvre and the Seine are a short walk apart.

What does a typical one-day route look like?

Gare du Nord, a coach loop past the big boulevards, a Seine cruise, lunch at the Eiffel Tower, free time near the Louvre, and back to Gare du Nord.

Can you go up the Eiffel Tower in one day?

Yes: the lunch option takes you to the first floor, and a Golden Tours day includes the second floor.

Neither includes the summit. If height matters, the second-floor day is the one to look at.

The Eiffel Tower framed by trees
The tower is the centre of almost every Paris day trip.

Can you visit the Louvre?

Not properly on an escorted day: Louvre entry is not included, and the operator advises against booking timed tickets yourself.

Use the free time to walk the courtyards and the glass pyramid, or the Tuileries next door. The Golden Tours walking day includes Louvre entry from Wednesday to Monday, because the museum closes on Tuesdays. Going in on your own on a DIY day costs €32 for visitors from outside the EEA.

The Louvre pyramid is an easy free-time stop.

Do you see Notre-Dame?

Yes, from the Seine cruise; some Golden Tours days add a visit with a guide.

The Premium Tours itinerary passes Notre-Dame by boat. The Golden Tours lunch cruise day includes exploring Notre-Dame with a guide, though some guests on the walking day report missing it on busy days.

What about Montmartre?

It does not fit an escorted day, but a hop-on hop-off bus package can get you close to Sacre-Coeur.

The Evan Evans hop-on hop-off day lists a stop for the Sacre-Coeur basilica. On an independent day, the metro from Gare du Nord makes Montmartre an easy add.

What should you skip?

Versailles, full museum visits and anything that needs a fixed time slot late in the afternoon.

Versailles alone takes most of a day. Keep the afternoon loose: if the morning train runs late, the free time is what shrinks.

How do you make the most of free time?

Pick one area and stay there: the Louvre and Tuileries, or the Champ de Mars by the tower.

Agree the meeting time for the return, keep your phone charged and leave a buffer for the walk. A café on a terrace is a perfectly good use of 90 minutes in Paris.
